Wellington is a public company and has been operating markets for more than 150 years and can trace its history back to 1244 when Wellington Market was established by Royal Charter.

Initially it owned and operated retail, produce and livestock markets in the town of Wellington, Shropshire. It is now the leading private sector and only public company operating retail markets in the United Kingdom with markets at 26 locations providing over 5000 stalls per week.

The strategy to expand was agreed in the mid 1990’s and Town & Country Markets Ltd was acquired. This company has now operated markets for over 30 years and is the main operating subsidiary of Wellington Market Company. Over the past 15 years or so further new acquisitions have taken place including:

Large freehold indoor market halls.
Long leases on indoor markets from both local authorities and private landlords.
Freehold sites for outdoor markets.
Licences and agreements to run general outdoor markets, summer markets and specialist markets.
